“Selkie stories have always resonated with me. Maybe it’s the sense of longing, or the fierce determination of the selkie to return to her home, but I feel a connection with these mythical beings. When watching “The Song of the Sea” recently I found myself entranced and moved by its depiction of a selkie mother emerging from the sea to visit her son. Their bittersweet reunion was weighed down by the knowledge that the mother must return to the sea again and leave her son behind. Ultimately, she knows she cannot give up who she is, even for him. The pull of the sea and the pull of her true self are undeniable.”
